OLYMPIC PROJECTS IN THE SPRING TERM 2012
Our response to Olympic preparation will see year 8 working on/enjoying all kinds of different/off curricular work with an aim to raise awareness of the 2012 Olympic Games. The various activities will, in total span, the whole Spring Term.
Music 
Girls will be focusing on Form and Structure in music. Having done so, each girl will choose a country and write an Olympic Fanfare. This will follow a 6 week programme which will culminate in a recording or video.
Drama 
A 6 week scheme of work will cover issues/themes covering the hopes/dreams/aspirations of athletes and the struggles (political or otherwise) that they face: triumph over adversity.
Girls will be carrying out their work in class time in the first half of the Spring term.
MFL 
Girls will be taken into the computer suite in February to research Francophone Olympic countries to investigate their involvement in The Games.
Year 8 girls will work on their projects in class 7-10 February 2012
Geography 
Will there be a sustainable Olympic Legacy for London. The Geography department will investigate this. Previous Games will be investigated bearing this in mind e.g. Rome and Australia
Geography will be running their project in class time as a module for the whole of the Spring term.
English 
There will be a focus on ‘Reading’ in English:
1. Girls will consider the medal winning of the Jamaican bobsled team (media coverage/Cool Runnings)
2. German Olympic Israeli team hostage crisis focusing on written texts and the film ‘Munich’ by Speilberg
Film analysis and debate.
English will be running their project in class time 9-20 January 2012
Maths 
Girls will be asked to develop their skills in using Microsoft Excel. An investigation will lead the girls to understanding the factors that have contributed to improved running times. This will be in the form of a written report. Students will also work out which athletes from the past 4 Olympics would qualify for the finals of London 2012 by comparing finishing times with those of finalists in the last Olympic Games.
This project will involve all year 8 on one day only. Thursday 1 March
Science 

Girls will choose an athlete and research them and their career to date
Performance data will be investigated
Muscles researched for their particular sports discipline
Technology will also be acknowledged in terms of how it has supported the development of Paralympic competitors. How does this technology work?
Olympic Challenge for Mini Scientists
PE 
The PE department will be part of a London wide Dancethon held later in the year. Also…there is a possibility that the department will hold an Aerobathon to which will be invited other local schools.
Girls have been working on an Olympic project for 12 weeks already. There will be a ‘BIG DANCE’ in the Summer Term in which year 8 will be involved.
There is a possibility of a n on site Aerobathon also during the Summer Term.
History 
Research into 1948 Games The Austerity Games held in London. The differences will be marked.
History will be working with year 8 for 2 weeks from 19 -30 March
Art 
Girls will be assessing the posters that have been created by famous contemporary artists for 2012 Games recently released. Girls will research the individual artists’ work and create their own posters in the style of one of the artists of their choice. Girls may also take into account/assess some of the poster art from other Olympic Games through History to be found in the V&A Museum.
Girls in their Art classes will begin their Olympic Project after half term. Monday 20 February until the end of term 23 March.
FOOD/TEXTILES/GRAPHICS 
Girls will design a restaurant in the Olympic Village. This will cover exercises which design uniform for the staff, the restaurant interior, promotional merchandise and food design.
Year 8 girls will be working on their Olympic Project all of the Spring term
RE 
Girls will be invited to choose one of the major world religions and then be given a choice of Olympic countries which practice that religion. They will research that country and the religion based on the idea of the 5 rings. They will produce display work containing information on the lifestyles and religions of the various countries. It is possible that Lisa Dobriskey/or another former Olympian will come in as guest speaker during the girls’ study.
Girls will be working on their project from 30 January-10 February 2012
ICT 
Girls will be invited to take responsibility for the creation of specific areas of a website that promotes The London Olympics 2012. The site will be designed to assist tourists during The Games.
Girls will be working during their Science class time from 6-10 February 2012
