English Department

English in the Curriculum at St Ursula’s

Both at KS3 and KS4 English is, of course, a core subject, where pupils refine their reading , writing and speaking and listening skills. The department has consistantly achieved results way above the national average and the department’s teachers have specialist skills in drama, media, debating and other areas.

At KS3 and 4, English involves both Language and Literature and GCSE’s in both are taken.
Both KS3 and 4 English involves study of the novel, Shakespeare, poetry, non-fiction and the media. Also, at KS3 girls do two oral assessments and for GCSE there are three assessments that go towards the GCSE grade.
At St Ursula’s, the choice of novel, poetry and oral work them is carefully chosen by the teacher for each individual class.
In English there are many fun moments!

Geography/ English trip

Our trip to the Olympic sight was a truly interesting and valuable experience for all of us.  We got to see with our very own eyes the construction of the three stadiums.
This trip was really fascinating and the whole of year seven are really grateful to be among the people who get to experience the Olympics  as we have.
We travelled by train to Statford and walked to the Westfield shopping centre. There we asked people what they thought of the Olympics being in their area. The local shoppers felt very lucky, excited and amused about the Olympics being near them in London.
We then went to a place called the View Tube and got to see all three of the Olympic stadiums, pieces of art made for the event and watch a short video about it.
After we arrived at school we got the opportunity to make our class time capsules based on our trip and the Olympics.  Later they were buried and in five years’ time they will be dug up by the new year sevens after we leave St Ursula’s!

English/Geography Year 7 Olympic Project

Our trip to the Olympic view Tube was fun and interesting. We could see a view of all the Olympic sites they were constructing.
Firstly we went to Westfield shopping centre Stratford where we asked different questions about how people felt about the Olympic Games happening. This was enjoyable because we got to hear what how different people felt about the Olympics taking place in London.
Then we went to the Olympic View Tube where we saw a great view of the stadiums. Some were finished and some were still being worked on.
When we got back to school we made our time capsules for new year sevens to open in five years. It was all about the Olympics and how they affected us.
Overall, he project was exciting and educating and gave us an insight on people’s views on the Olympics.
