Gifted & Talented

Here at St Ursula’s, we are committed to providing a rich and challenging curriculum for all learners; one that promotes the highest standards and encourages each and every girl to achieve their full potential.
The aim of the Gifted and Talented registers is to ensure girls are being stretched to reach their full potential, which in turn will raise the standards of teaching and learning across the school as a whole.Gifted refers to the more academic subjects such as Maths, History and Languages, while Talented refers to more practical subjects such as PE, Art and Music.
Gifted and Talented registers run through the school, from Y7 – Y11. A number of factors are taken into account for nomination: Cognitive Ability Tests (CAT tests), records and notes from previous schools, ongoing teacher assessment and also observations by the Gifted and talented Coordinator.
Parental nomination can be vital when dealing with a Talented girl as extra-curricular sport, drama or music may not be evident.
At St Ursula’s, we make sure that there are plenty of opportunities for girls to take part in special projects, trips and competitions. These include:
  • Debating
  • Public Speaking – Y9 and Y10 – external course leader resulting in Borough Competition.
  • Latin – Online Course run for Yr8 (Beginners) and Yr9 (Continuers) at St Ursula's after school.
  • Russian – conversational classes run by Mrs Kowalski
  • Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition
  • Greenwich Science and Technology Challenge
Further on into their St Ursula’s career, girls also have the opportunity to go on Higher Education visits. These have included:
  • Fashion Futures at Lewisham College
  • Bitzesize Healthcare at St George’s University of London
  • Women in Engineering at Imperial College
  • Maths at Queen Mary, University of London

On the 25th of January several Year 11 students travelled to Mansfield College at the University of Oxford to gain more knowledge about university life and experience what studying at Oxford would be like.

Upon arriving at Oxford we received a warm welcome from our guide and to begin with were shown a presentation informing us of the various things to consider when applying to university, including accommodation, facilities, and courses available.
We then met two of the students at Mansfield College who answered any questions we had concerning studying at Oxford or the university application process.
Later, the two students gave us a tour of the college, and we had the opportunity to appreciate Oxford's beautiful architecture as well as seeing the numerous libraries the college possesses.

After enjoying a pleasant lunch at Mansfield, we had the pleasure of visiting Oxford's Museum of Natural History, where we were shown many interesting items, such as a polar bear's skull, elephant teeth, and several live species of cockroaches, which some girls were brave enough to hold!
Overall, the day was a great success as although it was a very enjoyable trip, it also gave us all an insight in to what our lives may be like in a few years time and left us with new found aspirations for the future.
