St Ursula’s Football club

The St Ursula’s Football club was started in 2002 by Mr Turpie. There was no tradition of Football at St Ursula’s before this due to the schools lack of facilities for playing. It was originally intended to be a fun club where players could practice skills every Friday; however within a year it had changed into a team.
In the first two years matches were limited to a couple of Tournaments a year, this lead to friendlies and in the last 5 years entrance to league and cup competitions.
Originally the school only ran one team, with younger players either playing girls several years older than them or not at all! For the past three seasons though the school has fielded an under 14 and under 16 team.
The lack of a pitch here has meant throughout this time the schools matches have all been played away, which makes the successful record of the girls even more of an achievement.
The schools best season was perhaps 2007-8 when the school won nine games out of nine and scored 65 goals in the process.

During this time Mr Turpie has continued to be involved, helped by Mr Small and Mr McDonald, and for the past two seasons by Miss O’Sullivan and Mr Horsford, who run the U14 team.

Listed below are some of the schools best ever players and their playing records, for a full list of up to date results see the other links in the folder.

St Ursula’s win Tournament in style

St Ursula’s U14 Football team won the school 5 a side tournament with the B team finishing a respectable 3rd.
The tournament opened with the St Ursula’s B team drawing 0-0 with Plumstead Manor in a game they dominated and missed several good chances, including a penalty. Daniella was outstanding and Sonia in goal pulled off three excellent saves.
The A team then beat Plumstead Manor 6-0 with all six players scoring including Lisa, her first goal for the school. Then the St Ursula’s derby saw the A’s beat the B’s 3-0 with Niamh scoring twice.
The B team then played really well against a very good Crown Woods team twice coming from behind with goals from Emma and Abbie to draw 2-2, before Crown Woods beat Plumstead 4-3 in an entertaining game.
The final game saw the A team play Crown Woods and clinch the tournament title by winning 3-2 in a tense and end to end match, Niamhs hat trick sealing the victory with Godgift also making a series of important saves.

Emily Laker  St Ursula’s Football team record goal scorer

In the recent game Vs. Crown Woods Emily Laker from Year 11 became the schools record goal scorer. Her four strikes took her to 65 goals in a school Football career stretching back to year 7. During that time Emily has consistently been a hardworking and brilliant player and even played for the U16 team in year 8!
If assists were counted Emily would probably be over the 100 mark as she has set up many goals for other players as well. Mr Turpie who has been her coach since year 7 said, “Emily is one of the best 2 or 3 players to play for the school team in the last 10 years, if not the best, as well as an inspirational captain and example to younger girls”.

Emily hits four to break record and beat Crown Woods!  01/03/11

Crown Woods 0-8 St Ursula’s (U16)

St Ursula’s U16 football team won comfortably away to Crown Woods and Emily Laker became the schools all time record scorer in the process. St U’s started well on Crown Woods brand new 3g pitch, with Emily helping herself to two quick early goals, one a curling effort into the top corner. Her hat trick followed before India cracked in a fourth with a tidy finish past the keeper. Then Emily finished off a great 5 player move following a cut back from Fiona. Finally in the last minute of the half Rosemary headed a cross at goal only for a Crown Woods player to handle on the line. She took the penalty herself and made it 6-0 at half time.
Crown Woods improved after the break and had several dangerous attacks, but Nancy made a fine save and the St Ursula’s defence lead by the excellent Emma and Whitney kept them out. At the other end Fiona went close after some clever wing play and Emily hit a rasping shot on to the bar.
Then with 5 minutes to go Molly won the ball and laid it off to Daisy, her pass allowed Emily to play in Janey who coolly finished from close range. Fiona then rounded off the scoring with a well hit shot from a tight angle.

Team
Nancy Hammond, Laura Manning, Whitney Sesay, Daisy Coleman, Molly Dewar, Sharna Stevens, Emma Owens, Emily Laker (4 goals) (C), Janey Curtis (1), India Blissett (1), Fiona Berry (1), Rosemary Jabbie (1 pen)

St Ursula’s U14s brave cold to defeat Colfe’s 5-0!!

Last Friday evening the U14 football team travelled to Colfe’s to play an 8-a-side match in near freezing conditions. An early goal from Dabby helped to warm our players up and this was followed by two goals from Niamh and one from Toyosi – the result of excellent interplay between herself, Niamh and Emma.
Sonya (GK), Lisa, Uwa and Daniella had very little to do defensively in the first half however Colfe’s grew into the game and put up more of a fight in the second half. Abby came on up-front and was close to scoring on a couple of occasions following good play from Isabella, making her debut. Niamh capped off a fine performance with her hat-trick goal having previously been denied a wonder goal after beating 4 players and the keeper only to see the ball stopped on the line. Mary also made her debut in the second half, slotting in seamlessly next to Lisa in defence.
Team: Sonya (GK), Lisa, Daniella, Uwa, Mary, Emma, Isabella, Abby, Toyosi (1), Dabby (1), Niamh (3)

Easy win for U16’s at St Pauls 22/11/11

St Paul’s 0-9 St Ursula’s    St Ursula’s U16 easily won their re match with St Paul’s as they fired in nine goals. After a slow start St U’s got into their stride and played some good football but struggled to hit the target, with Emily and Emma both firing over.
However after a defensive mix up between the St Paul’s defenders India nipped in and turned in the first goal.
Whitney and Daisy were teaming up impressively to stop the quick St Paul’s forwards and Chloe was very solid in goal and kicked well to set up several attacks.
From a Chloe kick and a foul Emma curled in a free kick, before Emily scored from a rebound then hit a shot from the edge of the box to take St Ursula’s into the half time break 4-0 up.
The second half saw Sharna and Janie introduced and they made an impression with fierce tackling from Sharna and some clever wing play from Janie who soon set up Emily for her hat trick then India for her second goal.
Emily then finished off a cross from Rosemary for her 60th goal for the school, before Janie tucked in a neat finish to make it 8-0.
St Pauls didn’t give up and Molly had to be quick to block a shot and Chloe had to make an excellent save but in the last minute the hardworking Rosemary got her reward as she raced on to a huge free kick from Whitney and beat the keeper for her first goal of the season to finish the scoring at 9-0.

St Ursula’s U14s Battle to Creditable 3rd Place

Yesterday the U14s took part in the prestigious Charlton Football Club Tournament at the football club’s training ground in New Eltham. The winners would go on to represent Charlton in a South east tournament with the chance of appearing at Wembley!
The first two matches against Erith and St Catherine’s were very difficult and the girls did well to come out of these with 1 point. Sonya Kuci made some excellent saves in these matches and was one of the main reasons we only conceded 2 goals. Following this were matches v Eltham Hill (1-1) and Colfe’s (1-0) where Niamh Manning started to make the tournament her own, bagging both goals. Up to this point we had to play 4 straight matches with no break so the girls were happy to rest their tired legs, especially the excellent Lisa Emovon who played every minute of every game and Uwa Eghianruwa-Guobadia who was replaced by Daniella Atibaka for only a few minutes.
We then played the same teams again, losing narrowly 1-0 to both Erith (who won the tournament) and St Catherine’s (2nd) before two more goals from Niamh, one of which came from a fantastic assist by Toyosi Ologunja, saw us beat Eltham Hill 2-1 and we then somehow drew 0-0 with Colfe’s with Dabby Njoku, Abby Dillon and Emma Ben-Jalloh all being unlucky not to score.
So, 3rd place in the end was a positive result for the team and one we hope to build on for the rest of the season.

St Ursula’s U16 win in Derby thriller 14/11/11

Thomas More 4-5 St Ursula’s
St Ursula’s Football club U16’s won a tense and exciting game away to a very strong Thomas More side. In foggy and slippery conditions the game started with both teams attacking and going close early on. However Thomas More took the lead after the St U’s defence failed to clear. Emily equalised with a low shot then made it 2-1 before Thomas More hit back again.
More defensive errors from St U’s meant the home team went 3-2 up as the wet surface made it Description: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\MEDIA\CAGCAT10\j0299763.wmfdifficult to retain the ball, but Emily scored a free kick to send both teams in level at half time and complete her hat trick.
St Ursula’s regained their composure and played much better after the break with Emma controlling the midfield and India working tirelessly as centre forward. Her persistence paid off as she latched on to a through ball, won it from a defender and hit a 25 yard screamer into the bottom corner. St U’s then were unlucky on several occasions as Fiona and Emily went close. Rosemary and Whitney also played very solidly to prevent Thomas More from equalising.
St U’s finally sealed the win when India crossed for Fiona and she flicked it past the keeper then finished nicely to make it 5-3.
Finally with almost the last kick of the game Thomas More pulled one back with a fantastic shot that gave Chloe no chance in goal, but St U’s hung on for a well earned 5-4 win.

ST URSULAS U14 TEAM
St Ursula’s 7- St Paul’s 1

St Ursula’s recorded their 1st win of the season with a great victory over st Paul’s yesterday. St Ursula’s started the brightest with excellent running down the wing from Niamh Manning and were unlucky to score straight away.
St Ursula’s 1st goal came from a corner where Lisa Emovon sent the ball in low and hard and Niamh was on the box ready to tap it in. St Paul’s quickly responded and their best player sent the ball in with a great strike that Godgift Nnadozie in goals could do nothing about. Just before the half Niamh once again made a great run down the wing and got taken out completely by a St Paul’s defender and just as the referee was about to blow the whistle for a free kick Dabi Njoku  controlled the ball and buried it in the bottom corner. The goal was given and St Ursula’s went into half time 2-1 in the lead
The 2nd half began strong for the St Ursula’s girls and Toyosi Ologuna bagged her 2nd goal of the season with a fine finish from a Daniela Atibakah corner. Daniela was amazing at the long throw in’s and played extremely well in midfield. Uwa displayed a player of the match performance in the 2nd half and it was her excellent tackles and tracking back along with Sinead St John and Qattara Cousins that prevented st Paul’s from having a shot on goal in the 2nd half. Dabi (who scored 2 goals in her 1st game), Emma Ben-Jalloh and Niamh finished out the game with 4 more goals – 2 from Niamh, 1 more from Dabi and a fine individual goal from Emma to seal the victory for St Ursula’s and hopefully set the ball rolling for many more.

Scorers: Niamh Manning (3), Toyosi Ologuna (1), Dabi Njoku(2) and Emma Ben-Jalloh (1)
Player of the match: Uwa Guobadia

TEAM: Godgift, Lisa, Uwa ©, Niamh ©, Daniela, Sinead, Toyosi, Dabi, Emma, Qattara.

U16’s thrash St Pauls Description: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\MEDIA\CAGCAT10\j0299763.wmf04/10/11

St Pauls 1-7 St Ursula’s
St Ursula’s U16’s bounced back from their cup defeat to take revenge in the local derby vs St Pauls. They dominated against a good team, playing some nice Football and defending solidly throughout.
Emily opened the scoring, firing in after good work from Fiona. After St Pauls equalised she made it 2-1 when Janie cut the ball back on the edge of the box. Janie then finished neatly making it 3-1, but Chloe making her U16 debut had to make 2 good saves and the defence lead by Emma and Sharna dug deep to stop St Pauls scoring again.
In the 2nd half St Pauls came out fired up but St Ursula’s made it 4-1 when a massive clearance from Whitney on the half way line deceived the keeper for her first goal for the school.
The next goal came from a through ball from the impressive Rosemary that India raced on to before squeezing the ball past the keeper. Then Emily completed her hat trick with a fine finish from the edge of the area, before the tireless Fiona burst through, chipped the keeper but hit the bar. Nancy followed up to complete the scoring and make it 7-1.
